Foil stamping is a specialized printing technique that utilizes heat and hot stamping foil to create a glossy design on various materials such as paper, vinyl, textiles, wood, hard plastic, leather, and more.
This technique, commonly referred to as hot stamping, dry stamping, foil imprinting, or leaf stamping, can be paired with dimensional embossing to create impressive letters and images on a wide range of items. These may include business cards, book covers, gift cards, office folders, and various other personal or professional products.
Unlike traditional printing methods that use magnetism, plates, or inks, foil stamping employs dies, which are sculpted metal stamps. These heated dies transfer a thin layer of metallic leaf onto the surface of the material. The foil comes in a large roll, backed by Mylar, allowing for multiple passes. When heated, the die presses the foil against the substrate with sufficient pressure, causing the foil to adhere only to the intended areas, leaving a subtle imprint.
Foil leaf comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, including standard gold or marbleized green, as well as more unique options like matte, pearlescent, holographic, opalescent, or glossy finishes. Some types of foil are semi-transparent, allowing the underlying color to show through. This process not only provides a vibrant image with depth but also offers versatility as it can be applied to a diverse selection of substrates compared to traditional ink-based printing methods.
